ExpressVPN Announces 2017 “Future of Privacy” Scholarship Winner
Nearly 2,000 Students in the U.S. and U.K. Submitted Creative Essays to Raise Awareness About Internet Privacy, Security, and Freedom of Speech
October 19, 2017—ExpressVPN, a leading VPN provider, has today announced that Elizabeth Fijalkiewicz is the winner of its 2017 “Future of Privacy” Scholarship Program. Entrants were ask to envision a future society in which governments across the world had achieved absolute digital surveillance, and 26-year-old Fijalkiewicz, a graduate student from Chetek, Wisconsin, competed against nearly 2,000 other U.S. and U.K. students for the US$5,000 prize money.
A graduate student at the University of Minnesota, Fijalkiewicz says the inspiration for her story, which is about a young woman trying to covertly disseminate critical medical research, came from trying to imagine “a worst-case scenario” and then going from there: “My mind naturally went to the scientists, the scholars, people to which a restriction of flow of information would be most abhorrent.”
Fijalkiewicz’s winning story can be read on the ExpressVPN Future of Privacy Scholarship page.
The ExpressVPN Future of Privacy Scholarship was created to increase student awareness around three key areas:
- Internet privacy
- Freedom of speech issues
By 2018, ninety-nine percent of classrooms across the U.S. are expected to be equipped with high-speed broadband. But with that growing connectivity comes increased privacy and security risks. As more students are bringing their internet-ready devices to class and growing up in an increasingly digital world, awareness of basic online security and a fundamental understanding of privacy rights are more important than ever.
